William McKenney, 64, Found

DALE CITY Va.—A missing Dale City man was found Thursday in Washington after he collapsed while shoveling snow.

Someone called an ambulance after William McKenney, 64, collapsed in the city about 3 p.m. He was identified while being treated at Howard University Hospital, police said.

Prince William County police had been searching for McKenney since he vanished during a walk in his Glendale Road neighborhood Tuesday afternoon.

McKenney’s niece, Sharon Doss, whom he lives with in Dale City, said she does not know how her uncle got to Washington, but she was happy to hear he was okay.

“We are very relieved that this has ended the way it has,” said Doss. “We know that he is in good condition, he is a little disoriented and that the hospital has him under observation.”

The hospital nurse was unaware her patient had been reported missing, but did call the Woodbridge Senior Center McKenney frequents and was able to obtain Doss’ phone number to notify her that he had been found.

McKenney, also known as “Puddin’” to his friends and family, has relatives in Washington and worked as an engineer for the city’s school system for 30 years. He has never married and has no children.

Doss said her uncle has been talking about going back to Washington to visit friends, but was suffering a bout of depression because his current medical condition prohibits him from driving. He is also entering early stages of dementia, said Doss.

“He gets frustrated sometimes because he cannot do some of the things that he has been used to doing all of his life,” said Doss.

Police in Dale City conducted a massive search for McKenney Tuesday and Wednesday, using dogs, rescue teams and a police helicopter to try to find him.

Officers searched fields, creeks and neighborhood streets near his home on Glendale Road.

Police also put up fliers in shopping centers and public locations near McKenney’s home with his photo and description.

McKenney disappeared about 2 p.m. Tuesday after he told Doss he was going for one of his regular afternoon walks around his neighborhood.

Instead of taking his regular route about a block down from his home and back again he walked in the opposite direction and never returned, said Doss.

Doss warned her uncle not to walk far because of the snow and ice built up on the street and sidewalks, but said he dismissed her warning, telling her “I’ll be alright.”

William McKenney Missing

William McKenney went for a walk Tuesday afternoon and never came home.

The 64-year-old retired District of Columbia schools engineer, known to his friends and family as “Puddin’,” frequently takes walks down his neighborhood street in the 4100 block of Glendale Road.

But instead of walking his usual route one block down to Greenbriar Drive, he set off in a different direction, said his niece, Sharon Doss.

“I came out and I stood right at end of the driveway and I watched him, but I had forewarned him that it wasn’t safe to go out because of all of the snow and the sidewalks being covered in snow, and he said his famous thing, ‘I’ll be alright,’” said Doss.

McKenney lives with Doss, her husband and son.

McKenney went missing 2 p.m. Tuesday. When he didn’t come home, Doss said she got into her car and searched neighborhood streets for her uncle, but couldn’t find him. That’s when she called police.

Search teams and local police officers worked through the night and throughout the day Wednesday to find McKenney, concerned because he has the beginnings of dementia and may be disoriented, said Prince William police spokeswoman Erika Hernandez. He also suffers from numerous medical conditions and need medication.

With two feet of snow already on the ground in some places, searchers had to contend with cold temperatures and some light snow falling from the skies. If McKenney is outside, police said the weather could be a major factor that could determine his survival. Overnight temperatures Tuesday into Wednesday dipped into the teens.

About 1:30 p.m. Wednesday, police used a bloodhound outside his home and searched a wooded area and a pond near his home at the end of Glendale Road.

Officers also distributed fliers with his photo, searched wooded areas behind the Glendale shopping center and along power lines off of Dale Boulevard, while officials coordinated their search from a Dale City fire station on Hillendale Drive.

With no new leads Wednesday, police also utilized the help of Fairfax County police’s helicopter, Fairfax 1, and checked with officials at the Potomac and Rappahannock Transportation Center, as he is known to use to use the OmniLink local bus service to get around, said Hernandez. The avenues produced no new leads.

McKenney never married and has no children. He spends many of his days at the Woodbridge Senior Center with his friends, said Doss. The center was closed Tuesday and again Wednesday as employees worked to clear snow and ice from the parking lots.

Doss and a neighbor described McKinney as a quiet man.

“I usually see him while he stands on his porch and we usually exchange greetings,” said Marie Jones, who lives next door. “When it is warm outside, I can always see him walking.”

McKenney is black, about 5 feet 10 inches tall and 260 pounds. He has gray hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing a brown suede jacket, a blue striped shirt, blue jeans and gray sneakers. He walks with a limp.

Anyone who has seen him or has information on his whereabouts is asked to call Prince William County police at 703-793-6500.
