Hunters, husband help find missing Merrimack woman
MERRIMACK – A worried husband and two observant hunters are being credited for quickly finding a 69-year-old woman who had fallen into a roadside ditch yesterday around dusk.
Police Capt. Michael Dudash said a resident of the Woodland Park neighborhood called police shortly after 4 p.m. to report that his wife, who has dementia, had gone for a walk and had not returned. It was growing dark and starting to snow.
Police dispatched four cruisers to the area and contacted A Child Is Missing, a Florida-based program the department contracts with that automatically sends recorded alerts to all telephone numbers listed in Merrimack, according to Dudash.
About 10 minutes later, he said, two hunters came upon the woman in a ditch near the intersection of Patten and Joppa roads. A police cruiser happened to pass by at that moment, and the woman was taken home, where an ambulance met her. "She was checked out and she's fine," Dudash said.
"She was very thankful for everybody that helped her."
Dudash said the woman was lucky. "If it wasn't for the hunters, there was a good chance you could drive by and you wouldn't even see her."
And with the darkness and worsening weather, he said, "If a car went off the road, she easily could have been run over."
It's the second time in a two-week period the town police department has activated the reverse 911 system, according to Dudash.
Yesterday's alert triggered several return calls from residents who volunteered to participate in a search party; instead, they were told the news that the woman had been found, he said.
