Fate draws many Chinese all in when gambling
A telephone that rings in the middle of the night usually means trouble. This one was no exception. A Chinese-American friend was hysterical at the other end.
Her family was having dinner at a crowded restaurant in New York's Chinatown when her 80-year-old father got up from the table and went to the men's room. Somewhere on his way back to the table, he forgot where he was.
Mr Feng had been an Alzheimer's patient for more than a year, becoming more forgetful day by day. At some point, he had wandered out the front door and went missing.
The family had desperately searched the streets and alleyways of Chinatown, asking strangers for help and frantically calling out his name, until finally the police told the family to go home and wait for a phone call.
An hour later, my friend called back. Her father had been found by a parking lot attendant at a gambling casino in Connecticut, 150 miles north of the city.
It seems that Mr Feng, lost in a fog of memory, had sought refuge in the one place familiar to so many old people in Chinatown: A tour bus that regularly takes them to the Mohegan Sun casino on an Indian reservation in Connecticut.
When a gambling casino becomes an old man's idea of home, you know the Chinese obsession with "good luck" has gone too far.
One decade ago, Mr Feng hit a slot machine jackpot and won a new car. The money he has since thrown away at the gambling table probably amounts to three times the worth of that new car, which is why the casino awarded the "big prize" jackpot in the first place.
God only knows how many Chinese families are in financial ruin over gambling fever, either unable or unwilling to accept what any fortune teller could truthfully predict: "You cannot win!"
A Chinese gambler in my New Jersey neighborhood lost his Sichuan-style restaurant in poker debts to the Russian mafia, a truth that become apparent when the new owners put a painting of Red Square over the entrance to the dining room.
